Eco-System - Open Ocean

 In Genomics we had to create a Biomass/ecosystem to share. I chose open ocean because we did the savannah with Dr Theirry.

The Haven

 The book I am reading is called the Haven. I had picked this book up last to try and read it, but I didn't find any interest in it. But since I have been reading lately I found it very interesting, funny and also mysterious. I am up to the part where a boy named Ollie was about to leave the people who saved him when he made a deal with a gang leader to be able to find his son. But in the number of days his dice roles on.

 This week Dr Jannie came to us for our Genomics lesson. We learnt about many things like Ecosystems, Biomass and the first life on Earth.

Day 4: Garden @ School

 The beans now have a smelly stench. The bean has stopped expanding, the colour is still the same but it looks a little bit like it is shrinking. All the water has evaporated from the beaker but some of the paper towels have soaked up the rest of the water.

 The pink seed is losing its colour, and it is expanding a little bit.

No sign of anything else happening to the seed.

 We have to give an estimation of what is the best condition for a seed to grow. We also had to give an estimation on how many days it will take for the shoot to come out and the roots too.

We put 4 paper towels into our beacon and it soaked up alot of water. We put in 150 MLS

Technology

 Today in hard material I am currently working on a pendant by pewter casting. There are so many steps but I am sandpapering the sides to make them so smooth. I have been enjoying my experience and hope to do more activities like this in the future. I am making a controller pendant for my friend Charis because he said he didn't get any present, for his birthday since we were in lockdown No.2

Best Learning This Year: Genomics Riddle

My Best learning this year was when I got the chance to learn about Genomics, the tree of life, genomes, and learning the scientific language. It was thanks to Dr. Theary for willing to come every Thursday to teach us more and more about genomics. 

 You are to create a riddle of a creature from our tree of life.  I want to describe the creature using the correct language/scientific language.

Maori Language Week

 This afternoon we had split up into groups to practise something for Maori language week. There was a dancing group, a singing group, a pepeha group and a weaving group. We are going to rotate on each subject every afternoon as a showcase for Friday. 

We started with the dancing group, we practised the E Papa Wairi with rolls of newspaper. We had got the whole dance but some kids kept forgetting the moves. Hopefully next time we could learn the dance with the song because that was the part that was missed out. When I saw the people who went to weave I got really excited for when we get to try it.

Writing

My education has changed significantly. Due to COVID - 19, I have been learning virtually. This is learning from home via the internet. This is the second time around.

Learning virtually is very different from having to be physically inside the classroom. There were several things I could do at school that I couldn’t do at home. Like talking to my friends physically, but at home, I had to talk to them virtually every day.

At school, we had a rigid timetable but at home, I was able to do my work at the cost of my own time. The video calls sometimes had technical difficulties like lagging and people's sound not working. We also had many students missing due to their lack of motivation for learning.

Title : Guts Author: Raina Telgemeier                          Date: 4 September

What was the book about? A girl who had stomach problems, while struggling to tell her friends. She also was bullied a lot. Raina Started going to therapy to help her with her problem. She finds out she's not sick, she just has I.B.S and doesn’t want to tell her friends. Raina becomes friends with her bully and finds out about her problem.

What 3 things did you like about the book? Explain why I liked the creativity the author had and wrote in this book. I know the feeling when you want to puke. I love that raina became friends with her bully.	What 3 things didn’t you like about the book? Explain why. I liked everything about the book.
What is your favourite part? When raina showed her breathing steps, I also tried it myself and it felt calming.	Who would you recommend the book to and why? I would recommend this book to year 7 & 8 students. It is a funny book but also something that you could probably relate to.

	Billions of years ago. A simple organic compounds that form into a complex one. They can manage to reproduce.
	Its was the very first life on earth
	It has helped many species that are alive on earth today.
	The Earth was very suitable for the species that lived before us.
	These elements are essential to our life • Hydrogen • Carbon Dioxide • Methane • Nitrogen • Phosphate • Ammonia
	These elements react with each other so they need liquid Salphant / Water / H20.
	But these elements also need a massive source of energy.
	AUTOTROPH & HETEROTROPH. AUTOTROPH - Makes it own energy to survive HETEROTROPH - Eats other living organisms to gain energy.
	Places on land and surfaces close to the ocean have the advantage of the sunlight.
	There are hydrothermal vents at the bottom of the ocean that are kilometres under the water
	A hydrothermal vent is a hole in the ground where the water is able to go inside, where there are chambers of magma. Then it bursts out in hot water with minerals and chemicals.
	L - last   U - universal   C - common   A - ancestor
	Scientists found genes, that are usually found in species.
	LUCA lived in a hot oxygen-free place.
	There are 2 kinds of hydrothermal vents black smokers and white smokers. Each of them gives different traits.
	The top choice for the cradle of life is white smokers because black smokers were too hot for LUCA.
	It is strongly full of Alkaline and is lacking Carbon Dioxide.
	The black smokers had help with the carbon dioxide, that gave life to species on the lost city.
	The life on earth may have been given components to support the first organisms. That has evolved into life on Earth today.

Wild Boy

This slide helpt me to think about myself and my family, but what we are good at that we haven't realised. The man in the text found something that I thought wouldn't be possible. I found inspiration and have felt differently dreaming about what I could find out when I try something new.

Also here is a video of a teacher who changed a boys life, I felt like I could understand the emotion the man was having while telling his story.

The Cat And The King

  Book Review

Title: The King and the cat Author: Nick Sharrat                                                Date:7.8.20

This book is about a king and a cat whose kingdom has just burned down, so they are trying to live a normal life in number 37 Castle Close road. They wish everything could go back to the ways it used to be but as the story carried along, the king started to enjoy living an unroyal life.

What 3 things did you like about the book? Explain why I like how the cat was able to write like and act like an actual human The author was very creative with how he wrote this story I can relate to how the king felt when he missed his kingdom. I always miss the places I used to live in.	What 3 things didn’t you like about the book? Explain why. THERE WAS NOTHING ABOUT THE BOOK I DIDN’T LIKE!!!
What is your favourite part? My favourite part was when the  Cat and the King tricked their neighbours Into thinking, they were going to eat  A real pork head, a swan and blackbird pie. But in the end, they find out its only cake.	Who would you recommend the book to and why? I would recommend this book to people who have just moved into a new town, country or school. I have experienced how it feels like but now I have overcome that fear.

Technology / Science

Today we made elephant toothpaste, we watched the instructions before we could start the next period. 

Aim:- To Make Elephant Toothpaste 

Equipment:- Hydrogen Peroxide / H 020   | Food Color | Dish Washing Liquid, Dry Yeast, Hot & Cold Water.

Method:-

1. Add Hot Water Clear Cup
2. Add 2 Tablespoons of Yeast
3. Mix It Well
4. Inside a water bottle fill it with Hydrogen Peroxide & Dish Washing Liquid
5. Put Water Bottle into a tray
6. Pour Both liquids into the bottle
7. WATCH AS THE TOOTHPASTE EMERGES FROM THE BOTTLE!!!!

Result / Outcome:-

The Outcome was that the toothpaste burst out of the bottle and spread all over the tray.
